History of the steamtug WOLTMAN
The tug Woltman is the last one of sea-going tugs with a steam-powered coal-fired boiler in Germany.
Woltman was built in 1904 at the shipyard of the Gebr?der Sachsenberg at Ro?lau on the River Elbe for the “Strom- und Hafenbau” on behalf of the Financal Department of Hamburg.
In addition to the general plan of the ship 86 more detailed drawings have been preserved from 1903.
The tugboat was intended to work with the “Bagger XI” “Excavator XI ) and was stationed at the Waterways and Shipping Department at Cuxhaven.
Her working area were the lower Elbe and the Elbe estuary. Woltman was in use until 1976, but was then discarded for economic reasons and sold.
In April 1984, the Woltman was bought by the Museum Kappeln and shifted to the shipyard of Buschmann & S?hne at Hamburg
After a successful repair of the hull, the boiler plant and the engine, the tugboat could resume operations on the 12 January 1994 again.
In 1994, the newly formed "F?rderverein Schleppdampfer Woltman e.V." took over.
They had set it as an inception, that the Woltman would to be returned to her original technical condition of 1904 and to keep the tug as a technical monument to sail and make it available to the public.
Owing to the general condition of the ship, a comprehensive restoration was necessary.

The remaining original plans enabled the organization "Jugend in Arbeit e.V” (Youth at Work Association) to reconstruct the crewmess, lounges and cabins..
Woltman got a new boiler, which was exactly built like the original.
The hull, machinery and all technical facilities were restored.
The funnel was extended to its old length.
Finally, the tug Woltman sailed again after successful acceptance by the GL and the See-BG in June 2004
