Future of CR

Dear members and friends,
when I convinced Robbie not to let CR "die" 2 years ago, I thought that our site had a future as Forum, but it seems that it is mostly being used now as a Database for research or only for looking around.
It is really a pity that on FB (Facebook) hundreds of shipphoties are being posted, which can be viewed only at the time of posting, afterwards only to be viewed again by scrolling down endlessly (depending on the amount of postings in the meantime) or by using the their search engine if the name of the ship is known.

My frustration is immense, having spend quite an amount of my money for the fees for Yahoo which wasn`t covered by donations as well as the time a lot of friends and members invested in posting their "treasures" as well as their knowledge. I did ask for your opinion in order to know what should be improved or what "ails" you and should be changed, but maybe silence is a polite way of telling me to "bugger off"
Well, I pledged to Jackie (Seadog Pete`s widow) and Rick, that I will not let them down, keeping CR alive as long as I`m allowed to, because CR is dear to me and that I don`t want that all their efforts, sharing thousands of their pictures and their knowledge with us, was in vain.
Rick and Kent are not in good health, which prevents them to visit us at the moment. I pray for their well being, keeping all fingers crossed that their health is improving.

Don`t get me wrong please, we welcome everybody who is only looking around or searching for photos, details or history of ships, but contributions are more than welcome and necessary if we`re considering us as a Communtity for Shipping Enthusiast and not "only" a Database.....

Future

Dont get depressed Dierk there are a few people who dont use these anti social sites and keep getting request daily for me to join and I will not even if the planet freezes over. Keep up the good work with the site and will still keep everybody advised of activities at Bideford Yelland and the shipyard at Appledore. I know the weather reports can be boring but that's what the British do best.

Guess the best for everybody is a kind of co-existence, as we all got the same interest. FB`s advantage is that it`s FREE, posting is (maybe a bit) easier and you can get replies within minutes from lots of fellow group members. But like I stated before, the big disadvantage is, that all postings can only be viewed right after posting, afterwards only by scrolling down, sometimes endlessly, depending on the amount of postings, or by using the search engine. Hope that we`re not alone with our opinion, CR wasn`t meant to be a one, two or three man/men show, taking care of a kind of Maritime Database

Good evening Norman and all,
I like to point out that there are no "anti-social elements" in the various maritime groups at (or is it correct "on" ? ) Facebook, or most of the people using it, but I totally agree with you that there are a lot of "shitty" people who righly deserve this name or even worse, who are using it for their evil gains.
I know a lot of friends, as well a many other well known names in the maritime community, who are using this platform for sharing their excellent and sometimes rare pictures, but the shortcomings is like I mentioned before. Like I`ve said, it is easy to post there, while especially at CR we got some problems with the performance, but this is due to our provider, but we can`t effort a better one, and even they got problems from time to time. But even if we could afford it, the possibily of losing all content (again) is immense and nobody would or could guarantee that our content could be taken/switched over without complete loss, so we`re stuck with them

If we can interest some of the contributors of these maritime groups, that by posting (some) of their "treasures" on Coasters-remembered or other excellent maritime sites, they would lose nothing, their contributions can be shown to more interested shipping enthusiasts, as well as in their maritime groups. This way everybody benefits and their would be no losers. Am sorry for the delay, replying to this "special" topic, was busy with "our" TIGER and didn`t want to have time for wording my words carefully in order to avoid misunderstandings, as I`m not good enough with my english skills to "fire away"

Hi Dierk and all.
Quite separately I am sending you a note about this subject Dierk.
I have nothing with Facebook, do not use it and am not really interested in that medium.
I agree it serves no purpose to change host as the danger exists that you lose part or whole information gathered over the years.
Just hang in there Dierk, the site still does well except that the activities, read "entries by members" have come down a bit.
This you will find with many other sites, some sort of saturation may be the reason.
