DFDS crew awarded medal of bravery

IMO has decided to award DFDS captain Andreas Kristensen and the crew of the DFDS Seaways cargo ship Britannia the award "2014 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea" for their brave handling of a serious fire at sea on 16. November 2013. Andreas Kristensen will receive an official award at a ceremony at IMO headquarters in London on 17 November
The fire occurred while the ship was en route from S?rreisa to Bergen in Norway with 20 crew members and 12 passengers. The ship was carrying military equipment, including large quantities of dangerous goods which had become dislodged during the harsh weather and thus started the fire.
During the fierce fire the ship lost essential features, but by a joint and highly professional effort, the crew maneuvered the ship manually so that they could proceed towards the Norwegian coast and seek shelter behind some coastal islands, where they eventually fought fire. With the help of a Norwegian firefighting ship, the fire was finally declared extinguished about 8 AM - 13 hours after it was started.
"We are first and foremost happy that none of the 20 crew members and 12 Norwegian soldiers on board was injured. This is largely due to the captain and the crew's incredible efforts to extinguish the fire and ensure people and goods on board under particularly difficult circumstances. It was quite extraordinary efforts that clearly demonstrate how important it is to train and train firefighting on board and - not least - how much difference prime seamanship can do," says Executive Vice President Henrik Holck, who is responsible for HR, operation of DFDS ships and crews.
Andreas Kristensen, who was in focus in 2011 for a spectacular rescue of a young woman who fell overboard from King Seaways while traveling from Newcastle to IJmuiden in the Netherlands, is continually captain of the Britannia Seaways.
