The Liberty ship John C Preston was launched in 1945 by the Delta Shipbuilding Co., New Orleans, to the order of the USA Government, she was placed on bareboat charter to
the Greek Governmentand renamed HYDRA
Purchased in 1946 by Greek owners Michalos Maritime & Commercial Co. and renamed COSTAS MICHALOS
Bound from Archangel to Calais with a cargo of wood pulp in 1962 she was not allowed to dock at Calais as she had developed a heavy list. Anchored in the roads while efforts
were made to reduce the list her anchor cable snapped in a gale and she was driven aground on a sandbank on September 26th. After attempts to tow her off failed she became
a total loss when her back broke on November 10th
