Hi Kent - I will try find out more info but from memory the concept was B arge A board CAT amaran BACAT, think the barges used to go into Mistley floated off at the Parkeston Anchorage. Let you know Cheers Gareth

I?ll be glad if you can produce some "live info" about her, Thats very nice of you....

I dug a little data out from "some-where" and "every-where" and I?ll Keep on digging... but there is not that much around to be found of her.... The most, and best info of her and her "life" are stuck in those peoples heads who had the most, or anything at all, to do with her, so if anyone knows anything about her, please write it down and post it onto here. And if anyone somewhere got a photo or two of her in/under her "working conditions" or "life in General" please feel free to post it/them in here....

Bacat 1 is built in DK by Frederikshavn Vft 1974

Bacat 1 is a catamaran ship, there can load 10 pcs LASH Barges of 370 Dwt each piece.
10 on deck 2 in the tunnel between the hulls.
Loa 103,5 m._Beam 20,7 m._ Draft 5,4 m.speed 13 knots_ Engine 2 pcs. BW-Alpha Diesel total 4000 hp. _ Dwt 2700.
B/U Bombay Okt. 1986

As I remember it, there was made somewhat in the neighborhood of appr. 150 barges for the Bacat 1- System to work with.


Again as far as I remember it, the System was opposed by the dock-workers in the UK. They feared for their Jobs, because the barges could be towed to a place closer to the customers area, and the customers who owned the goods loaded on the barges could sometimes unload the barges themselves in peace and quiet with no rush to finish the Job fast because the ship quickly got to be on ist way to the next Destination. The customers could Keep the barges untill Bacat 1 came back their way to fetch it again. That could take days/weeks/even months... that was the Basic idea of the System and the Dockers did not like that, the saw it as a threat to the Jobs in the Harbors. SO the System met some resistances.

Thanks Gareth, I?d love to know and/or see more of this System, (also in use), if possible... I think the Yard and the Dr?hse-company, (owner of the "XXXX-Klint-ships"), had a good idea back then in 1972-1973.... Sadly I also think that they either were too early with the ship or the tried to Launch it in a wrong area of the World. Perhaps in another trade it would have been more succesfull....
