Pirates armed with automatic weapons attacked and hijacked the ship
underway. The owners and ships in the vicinity of the ship contacted the
IMB Piracy Reporting Centre. The IMB Piracy Reporting Centre immediately
contacted the coalition Navy to render assistance to the ship.
The ship was carrying a cargo of flammable chemical cargoes from Fos,
France to India. 19 crewmembers taken hostage. Ship released on payment
of ransom on 11 September 2008
Somali pirates release chemical tanker and crew
HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Somali pirates have freed a chemical tanker and its
entire crew, according to media reports on Thursday.
The report in the Times of India said the pirates freed the M/T Irene that
was seized on 21 August in the Gulf of Aden, which has become the most
dangerous body of water in the world.
