Otterham quay

A once busy little creek on the river Medway used by Crescent shipping who moved here in the 70s. It's all very quiet here now, just a small boat yard at the head of the creek and all the warehouses on the quay side are being used as a secure document store. I wonder if any members have any memeriors or pictures of the quay and the creek in its heydays.

Lots of memories of Otterham Quay, I used to work for Cantium Maritime Line in Rochester with steel contracts from Belgium n France to Limehouse Wharf Rochester and when busy there used to divert to Otterham to discharge.First stint at sea in 1973-4 joined at Otterham our 'Spring Lass' with Pete Barc as Skipper, trip to Dunkirk load coils and then to Rochester Cheers Gareth

Scheldt

Hi David,

I ran to Otterham Quay in 1970 on the "Scheldt" of Wm.H. Muller & Co. She was originally on the London/Paris from St.Georges Whf. Rotherhithe and later Free Trade Whf. Stepney. The trade finished in late 1969/70 due to the advent of roll on/roll off ferries which killed it for us.
Mullers then got the contract for two trips per week with general cargo(mostly wines and spirits) from Dieppe to UK. One trip to Shoreham and the other to Otterham Quay. We did a few trips and then that finished as Mullers sold the ship to Metcalfs Motor ships and she was renamed "Thomas M".

The Rochester starch boat was running there at the same time. I can remember the old pilot who took us in and out, he was quite a character. His son came with him sometimes. The Quay was a bit out of the way but there was a nice little pub not far away. It looks a bit bleak at low water in your photos. There were a few houseboats and wrecks opposite the berth I remember.

I see you are in Dover, I have been there for 40 years now myself. After the "Scheldt" (Thomas M) I went deep sea on the "Blenheim" and a few Baltic boats and finished up in Dover on the Hovercraft and later Townsends Ferries. I was on the "European Trader" for 12 years.

Hiya John,

When Metcalfs bought the "Scheldt" and renamed her "Thomas M" the change over took place in Sheerness dry dock. They kept on all the crew except for the skipper and mate as they had their own men to take over. I stayed in her as AB and also the two engineers. The new skipper was Jack Dyble from Yarmouth and the Mate was Barney ???. I stayed there for a few months before moving on. I don't remember Peter Williams, maybe he joined after I left.

Hello Trader Yes it was a long time a go an I right I came off the Ann M & I Lost my Dia Book Meany moons a go & the cook was Andy Dodson.

Nice little vessel the Ann M, did you know the MacBrearty brothers in Metcalfs John?. James was skipper of the Caroline M for years.
