    whitewash

Hello & good day 2 all @ R/D, We here in Gt Yarmouth have been looking foreword to the new Outer Harbour since the late 80s, well we have one now, & what a bloody whitewash, Here is the photos of the ?8m container cranes which have been idle since their arrival in May 09, & are being dismantled & being ship off to Venice, Italy in March/April this year. or what, Major work is to be carried out on the approaches to the outer harbour because of the major problems that has dogged the O/harbour in its first year or its operation, East port have come up with an idle, it is going to reduced the 200m entrance by 50m to reduce the impact of the swell whipped up by E/ly winds & @ the same time densifled & heighten the breakwater arms with extra rock. well all I can say is (What a load of bullocks) "Oops I should have said that" but it all comes down to, the plans of the harbour, when I was running in/out of Yarmouth in the 70s & much of my 30 odd as an mariner on the supply/survey/coasters there was talk of an O/harbour even then, we all no trying to get into Yarmouth on an E/ly ant good @ the best of times, we all reckoned the approaches should have be from the SE/S which would not have been to difficult to do or to navigate, Here are few facts:: Need for O/Harbour to accommodate larger modern V/

    whitewash - part 2

Sorry I preset the submit buttom I will continue with the facts:: The need for O/ Harbour to accommodate larger modern V/Ls, Former port & haven commissioners (now yarmouth port authority) obtains statutory powers to build the o/harbour in 86. It was to be built by 89 & create up to 4000 jobs, sound good @ the time? (86): Scheme suffers setback when government refuses to finance a third river crossing to serve it. Waverley District Council & ABP object, claiming port would damage sea defenses @ Lowestoft, Not far wong? Bill is passed @ the end of 86 that gives commissioners power to build operate & finance the port.
(87): Scheme hits the rocks as county councilors refuse to act as guarantors for a 20m loan from the european investments bank.
(91): Offer of 100m loan from international funds incorporated is withdrawn & the company accuses the ports delayed. The biggest user is Norfolk Line, pulls out of yarmouth, stressing it can't wait any longer for the O/Habour. The recession of early 90s also holds up progress.
(99): Norfolk Council & Yarmouth borough council undertake a review & find yarmouth can exploit its location & short sea crossing to reestablish ro/ro services. Leading marine transport consultants MDS transmodal demonstrate how ferries can provide a regular service to the Netherlands, cutting North Sea crossing time by over an hour.
(2000): Port authority,NCC & borough council agree to establish a project company. East Port, under chairmanship of businessman Richard Jewson. (AUTUMN): New proposals launched for lower cost scheme which represents good commercial investment.,as long as 30% of initial capital cost is met by the public funding, (like us the tax payer)
(01): A proposed ?12m of public funding package is put forward & hydraulic modeling undertaken to assess impact of the O/harbour on coastal processes.Partnership is formed with the port of Ijmuiden NL.
(02): Athens-based superfast ferries is chosen as prospective ferry operator.
(03): East port submits outline business case,& partnership UK studies commercial viability of proposals for east of england development agency.
(04): Proposals are sent to central government for approval. East of England withdrawal of last objection to project by APB, However, following representations by two major UK port crannies, a final period of consultation began in the autumn of 2004, & tension mounted as people in the town waited for a decision over the xmas period.
    (05) Jan: More than 20 year after the idea was mooted, the government finally confirm that the O/harbour project could go a head & be build using public funds.
    (06) July: International Port Holding (IPH) chosen as preferred partners to develop[ the project. Bosses concede that the harbour could open for business with no ferry operator in place.
    (07) May: Deal signed with IPH to build & run the new harbour, which will be known a East port UK.
Sept: A champagne party marks the start of the construction work, ( on the tax payers dosh I bet).
(09): RELATION SOUR when E/P UK SACKS 11 dockers as part of a switch to casual laber. (May): The first V/L to arrive @ the new with the new box cranes marking the hopes that the venture will develop as a container port. (Sept): The crew of the Toss Pol aria,@ the @ the new port to load but guess what no dockers to load the V/L so the the crew had to load there own V/L because there was not a enough docker in sight, that is because they where got the SACK.
(2010) Janu: The harbour becomes operational & with a few V/Ls we wonder why? Just ask Hans Master of the Arklow Viking.
November: East Port UK announces the suspension of its container operations with the 30m terminal's & the ?8m cranes set for removal before they have ever been used once.
To finish off: As Hans Cabee the Master of the Arklow Viking said there was too much movement, roll & pitch to have a safe load & he described the O/Harbour as completely exposed to the easterly winds & swells...
As I have said Whitewash. I also hope you all don't think this note BOORING...

Third and last part, now it is over to you

      eastport

Instead of just narrowing the entrance, it could be closed off all together, the resulting large puddle filled in, tarmaced over and used as a car park. Or houses could be built on it....!!!

Do they do any research at all? Dover Harbour has some problem with swell even though there's a beach for it to spend itself. Then they built Brighton Marina and had to add extra arms to exclude the swell.

Bridges are built with the tide running diagonally through them and VTS schemes are accepted by port management without referring to harbour masters or pilots.

If they even consulted the boy scouts they'ld learn a lot.

      Best, Robert.

Hello Robert, how are you very long time no see, you may remember me or not, but I was your relive mate for a short time, may be that I'm getting a bit senile as I can not remember the V/L?? Any way I was on one of the research V/L Surveying up/ down the roads & later no the supply boats out of Yarmouth, every one has said the same thing, (It isn't going to work) In the last few months V/L after V/L have abandoned any attempt to go along side owning to, to much wind & swell, Well any body have got a few bob to spare, can make a good business out of surfing?? where the Lt to mod ELy's weather conditions will attract many surfers from all over the world,hr hr.

I always thought it was 'a scheme too far' i.e. too far from where the cargoes come from and go to in the UK!! Utterly pointless with Felixstowe established and in better location for container or ro/ro. Why did Norfolk Line leave, bigger vessels yes but also better communications by far. GY and Lowestoft OK for offshore or local cargoes, never any more than that.
