Hallo from Hamburg,
am sorry Allan, I got no list of all the companies who ceased to exist or changed their trading. But they were quite a few, H.M. Gehrckens comes to my mind as well as
Heinrich von Bargen, well known to Peter and other members.Robbie will certainly know a lot how the master/owners suffered during the first recession. During the 70`s all parts were affected, the shipyards who lost their jobs due to Japan and Southkorea, the shippingcompanies and I believe also the "independent"shipbroker. I remember the starting of the new service called BTS (Brokers Telex Service) if I recall it correctly. A telex device was installed, which was printing out endless offers for cargo. One could see afterwards who was offering cargoes, very often you could see that 2 or more brokers had the same offer, but for different brokerage. Now it wasn`t no longer a secret who had the least fees, normally the broker acting for the shippers. So it wasn`t in the end usefull for some shipbrokers.....
But believe that Garreth will know more about this time, as I quit working in 1973 as shipping agent.
Today one has to look only into Equasis in order to know if a shipping company is still operating their own vessels, or if they are owned by a bank or other companies. Even the crew management is very often being done by other external firms, so all changed a lot in the last decades, but you all know a whole lot more of these changes.

Dierk, the BTS is still going I understand but email rules now.We had two of 'em in the office at Colchester, clack clack clack all the time
If you had a cargo that was'nt paying or for the wrong direction or a empty ship that your usual charterers did'nt have anything for then 'stick it on the BTS' and see if anyone salutes it
Cheers Gareth
