    The passing of Ruud

Ruud was a well known contributor of many maritime sites and although he was not too active on CR, then no doubt many members would know him.
His biggest hobby was shipping, an old sailor (chef) himself .
He lived in Helmond, a small township near Eindhoven and I use to visit him once a year when on holidays.

Ruud lost an arm in an accident in France many years ago and also was thus known as the one arm bandit.
He loved football and speed cycling and his T.V. was set on these commands...

Ruud was taken to hospital last week with severe kidney problems as I understand.
His original first name is Jan Peter, but he always used Ruud on the maritime sites.
R.I.P. Ruud. Safe voyage to your last port of call.

I never knew Ruud personally, but I saw his contributions to many maritime sites - and for that I salute him.

      R.I.P. Ruud.

        That's sad news indeed.
A wealth of shipping knowledge, he was known by many through his contributions to many maritime sites.

        Rest in Peace.

          The passing of Ruud

Hi all, got this information from Ruud`s favorite site, posted by Jos Komen http://www.kombuispraat.com

          Quote

          Translated (mostly) by Google Translator....
Today I received several emails asking when the cremation or burial of Ruud takes place.
Unfortunately this is not yet known, they must first locate relatives of Ruud.
As soon as something is known, I hear it from the neighbor of Ruud and I will mention it here.

If I get further news, will report asap... or if you receive information, please let us know....

            ruud

I am saddened to see the passing of Ruud. Although we never met we were in contact years ago discussing the Paris/Rouen ships. He was in several of them running up to Sweden at the same time as I was running to Manchester/Liverpool and London. He also worked ashore for a spell in a bar at Gennevilliers (Paris). He had so many stories to tell of his time on the Seine especially of Stockholm Jacks bar in Rouen.

Condolences to his family and friends. RIP Ruud, fair winds and a calm sea old sailor.

            Alec.

              Thanks for that Dierk.
It may take some time to locate his family as he did not have any contact with them and as far as I remember one or two of his children live in the U.K.
I met his neighbour once and him and Ruud became good friends indeed.
It is a sad situation, hopefully we may find out later that he received a proper farewell with his family around.

                The passing of Ruud

Hi all, Jos Komen posted an update on Kombuispraat.com

                Quote

Translation, mostly transferred from Google Translator
Many authorities are still searching for relatives of Ruud.
As an outsider, you get nothing at all to hear about the state of affairs, a sad thing.
Once more is known, I get this by Piet, the neighbor of Ruud.

                    Sad news... very sad news....

I feel so sad to learn that we have lost an other good man....
I bid you a last farewell and I hope you may rest in peace Ruud.
Thanks for letting me get to know you a little bit through our many chats and mails. We shared a lot of good stories and memories from our active years on the salty waves and we shared our love for the seas and the ships....
Thank you for letting me, and others like me/us, enjoy so many of the great photos in your vast collection. You were always willing to share both photos and knowledge ...
I always enjoyed your good company on our common shipping-site?s.
Thanks for everything Ruud and Rest In Peace my friend.
                    Last goodbye from
                    Kent
The pictures are either from my own collection and/or from the archives on the Bangsbo Museum in Frederikshavn in DK and/or from the Danish Maritime Museum in Elsinore, DK. Dates, locations and photographers are unknown factors if they are not specifically mentioned.

                        Dierk a.o.
It seems that the problem is caused by the local authorities who do not want to pass on any information to non relatives of Ruud.
His neighbour tried various times and he also could not find out if any family or relatives have attended the funeral.
Most likely we won,t be able to find out more.
This was confirmed by Jos Komen, the administrator of Kombuis.
Jos was a good friend of Ruud as they also visited maritime spotting sites together.
One also wonders what would have happened to the hundreds of boxes of ship photos and all other material , especially related to shipping.
Ruud rented a small flat but every inch inside was taken by ship's memorabilia.
You could say his flat was an uncontrolled maritime museum......

                          The passing of Ruud

Hi Jan, thank you very much for your information....

it is really sad, that the authorities act like this, only know that in Germany the
authorities have to pay for the funeral, trying to get some money back by selling the property of the deceased. Guess Ruud`s "museum" will be taken over by the company which is cleaning out his flat, so will end on sone flea-markets

Do know from Ruud, that he lost all his stored data, when his harddrive crashed and he got no back-up, he was very sad and depressed, because all his work vanished ......

but his postings on various sites, is still online and he won`t be forgotten by his friends....

                              New developments, really sad.......

Hi all, I did check every day the site of Kombuispraat for new information, but everybody there was kept in the dark by the Authorities. As they tried to find his family, but without success in England, same Authorities told them to refrain from further questions

Nobody did know that he got a brother, who didn`t know about his death, send emails and X-mas greetings, but without response, thought that Ruud, didn`t want to reply.....
Well, the whole sad story can be read here:

The 5 messages (till now) can be translated (understandable) by Google Translator. His friends at Kombuispraat are hoping that they can put some flowers on his grave (if it exist), as well as his brother....

Am sorry for my long silence, but nobody, including his brother and family in England received any information until the 10th of April.

                              Kindest regards
